Actor, comedian, and stunt man, Jackie Chan has been entertaining audiences around the world for more than half a century. Born in Hong Kong, Chan man acting debut in the Chinese film Big and Little Wong Tin Bar, which has since become a lost film. Since then, Chan has appeared in more than 150 films, most notably the Rush Hour trilogy where he starred alongside fellow funny guy, Chris Tucker. In the films, Chan portrayed Detective Inspector Lee, a member of the Hong Kong Police Force who teams up with American detective, James Carter (Tucker) and eventually forms an unlikely bond. While he had worked in several films prior to appearing in Rush Hour, including a starring role in the 1995 film, Rumble in the Bronx, Chan’s role as Detective Inspector Lee transformed him into a household name for a new generation of action loving viewers. For his outstanding work in film, including his creative martial arts choreography Chan has won a total of 28 various awards and currently holds the Guinness World Record for “Most Stunts by a Living Actor.”
In the year’s since the final Rush Hour film was released, Chan has gone on to star in several other successful American films including 2008’s Kung Fu Panda where he starred as the voice of Master Monkey, and the 2010 remake of the popular 1980s film, The Karate Kid . However, regardless of the role, Chan’s characters are always depicted as smart, strong, and invincible; so when news broke that Chan had died from a heart attack, (or while performing a difficult stunt on the set of an unnamed film), people all across the world were shocked and devastated. However, it quickly became apparent that the only thing Chan had fallen victim to was an internet hoax. While many people mourned his death, Chan was actually was alive and well, and any news of his sudden death was simply untrue. Over the next several years, Jackie Chan would “die” multiple times in multiple ways, and each times fans would be heartbroken.
Some people may find it impossible to believe that the Internet could successfully kill the same person multiple times, but in an age where all sorts of information are easily accessible, it can be difficult to separate the real from the fake. Although only time will tell when the Internet will decide to kill Jackie Chan again, here are some of the best Jackie Chan death hoaxes to date.
5. In August 2011, a Facebook page titled “R.I.P Jackie Chan 8/17/11” began to attract a following after spreading the rumor that Chan had died of a heart attack. It quickly became apparent that Chan was alive and the news was deemed a hoax; however, more than three years later, the “R.I.P Jackie Chan 8/17/11” page still has 863 likes and is still very actively posting images although they no longer seem to have anything to do with Chan.
4. In January 2012, another Facebook page declaring Chan’s death surfaced. This page, titled “R.I.P Jackie Chain”has declared itself ” the official R.I.P Jackie Chan Facebook Page,” and although the page hasn’t had any activity since November 2013, it currently has 3,501 likes.
3. In the fall of 2013, rumors again began to circulate that Chan had passed away, this time; however, Chan had apparently died during an accident while filming. A report which stated: Hollywood Breaking News – Chinese Celebrity Superstar “Jackie Chan” died after perfecting a deadly stunt. Jackie Chan has fallen 12 stories high from a building. FBI are currently investigating to detect if any foul play was involved,” again had fans crushed over the loss of the super star stuntman. But, again, these rumors were quickly dispelled as Chan’s whereabouts were confirmed. Shortly after the rumors were dispelled, Chan appeared on The Aresnio Hall Show and joked about the rumors his death saying, “My manager called me in the United States asking, ‘Are you okay?’ ‘I’m okay.’ ‘Everybody thought you’d died this morning!’ ‘What!’ I said. ‘No, no… don’t worry, before I die I’ll call you.”
2. In June 2013, a report began circulating through e-mails and webpages, stating: Actor Jackie Chan died while filming a movie in Kitzbühel, Austria early this morning – June 20, 2013. Preliminary reports from Austrian Police officials indicate that the actor fell more than 50 feet to his death in a remote area of the Hahnenkamm mountains while on-set during the filming of a movie. Specific details are not yet available. The accident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. (UTC/GMT +12). Additional details and information will be forthcoming. ” The news quickly made its way to Twitter, where worried fans began to express their condolences with several users tweeting “R.I.P Jackie Chan.” However, not long after the news circulated, Chan himself appeared in a photograph holding a newspaper which was dated after his “death,” and while he was thankful that people were so concerned about his well-being, he proudly announced to the world that he was still very much alive. Chan even joked, “Hi everybody! Yesterday, I got on a 3am flight from India to Beijing. I didn’t get a chance to sleep and even had to clean my house when I got home. Today, everybody called to congratulate me on my rumored engagement. Afterward, everybody called me to see if I was alive.” Less than a month after dying, Jackie Chan was killed again when Twitter users continued to post tweets announcing that he had passed away.

The page, again titled “R.I.P Jackie Chain” quickly gained nearly a million likes and stated: “At about 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday (October 28, 2014), our beloved actor Jackie Chan passed away. Jackie Chan was born on April 7, 1954 in Hong Kong. He will be missed but not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page.” Again, the rumors were quickly dispelled; however, it appears that the public is getting tired of mourning Jackie Chan’s death(s) and many people hope that this hoax has made its final appearance.
